If Carlsberg did church views, then they would most certainly have chosen the location for St. Michael And All Angels Church in Low Alwinton.
Nestled in the hillside at the foot of the Cheviots, people have probably worshipped here since at least the 9th century.

Looking in all directions is just glorious Northumberland countryside and it gets even more splendid as you walk up the hill through the graveyard.

A bit of history for you. There was originally a Norman chapel on this site which gradually expanded over the years. The Clennell family, who were a big cheese back in the 14th century, wanted a vault in the church and so the chancel floor was raised to accommodate it.

Over time the church fell into disrepair, however in 1848, a Durham based architect called George Pickering was doing a bit or work on the church at Holystone and had a bash at this one too. He rebuilt the porch and nave and new stained glass windows were installed too.

Over a 150 years later, the church bell was found to have a big crack in it and was replaced in 1990.

It's amazingly tranquil up here and we didn't see another soul while visiting. So head up the hill, breath the fresh air and have a peep at the ancient gravestones tucked in the trees.

Don't forget to visit the Low Alwinton Lime Kiln which is a 5 minute walk from here.
